I think sometimes it is a bit quite here, because of the lack of news about Iona, which is one of the best bands in the world. A few days ago Vaughan Granier posted a very long and exciting email about his journey through Scotland (and of course Iona!) and Ireland, after his visit to the last concert in London. I was also there with my daughter Danielle (also 17) and we enjoyed this concert and also the visit to London. I leraned her everything about flying by plane and how to check-in. She learned me everything about the "tube" or London "Underground", because she had been to London a few weeks before with her collegues of the supermarket where she is working. It was quiet a good time there !!! Anyway I hope you will enjoy this list, sometimes there's a lot of things to share. Bless you. Iona is also my favorite band. I discovered them in '95 when I saw them on a video put out by Forefront. I saw Iona twice in '96 in Chicago. I especially enjoyed the acoustic set they did in one of those concerts, which preceded a morning church service. Yet the full-set concert done the night before was excellent. Haven't seen them at Cornerstone--a little too far to drive, though I wish I would've made the trip in '97. Looking forward to something new. For a whole year I listened to nothing else, then saw them in '96 (right after JITM) and '97 (when HBS was released) in my home state of New Jersey. I just listened to HBS in its entirety today, while on a 2 hour drive in my car with the family... They make good travelin' music! :-D Wasn't sure if I was driving to the Poconos (Pennsylvania) or to heaven... Hoping maybe they'll do another US tour in 2000 after their new projects are released. Would like them to play at my "alma mater", Iona College (New Rochell, New York) - which Kathy Bunker (their booking agent) was really interested in because they wanted to play a large venue (1500-ish) somewhere near New York City. Maybe, Deborah, they'll even play in the Seattle or Portland or Vancouver area, since they've never played on the west coast of the U.S. before. One thing I know is that they usually do short US tours because tours across "the pond" (Atlantic) are hard on their families, and they don't like to be away too long. That's one of the things I really like and respect about them... For those who haven't yet, PLEASE try to see them live. What a phenomenal experience. Do whatever you have to, drive 8 hours, fly across the country and make it into a whole vacation, see them at several venues during the same trip! And definitely get to talk to them and do the autograph thing at the concerts. They have very cool T-shirts as well... Can't be an Iona fan without one (or two). I didn't know there were so many "young people" on this list and fans of Iona! I thought that most young'ns didn't enjoy the style of music- but I guess I was wrong. I can't remember where I first heard them, I think it was when I bought JITM without even hearing it (I do that with CDs alot- my collection is very eclectic.) I am 19 and haven't met any fans in person - although I've made a few by giving people Iona CDs as gifts. Obviously, I would like to see no music group better than them (though it may not be in this lifetime) so I really hope they come to the west side of the US. (Arizona!!) Just this week I had the opportunity to see my 2nd favorite band, the English electronic duo Orbital on the Community Service tour. Their music has the same ability to lift the human spirit to a higher level as does Iona's, though it's not for God's glory. In fact, I was very disappointed that their oncore song was "Satan." We need some Christian musicians that can bring electronic music to a higher level of quality than even Orbital. Wouldn't that be awesome! Thankfully, Iona is so prolific even though they've gone through all these changes. Well, it's been fun. I've been lurking on this list for a couple of months, but have never actually introduced myself. My name is Jacob Scherer, I'm 19, and I'm active US Navy. I first discovered Iona after Cornerstone '97 (that seems right...). My father had gone to see their concert while I was off watching some stupid punk band, and he was prompted to by "Journey Into the Morn" afterwards. I didn't actually listen to until quite a bit after the festival, and the first time I hated it! Fortunately, I gave it another go-round and actually sat with the lyrics open, listening to what they had to express. I absolutely wept. From that point on, I was absolutely hooked, and now have "Book of Kells", "Beyond These Shores", "Journey Into the Morn", and "Heaven's Bright Sun". I haven't had a chance to see them live, and I constantly kick myself for having missed them at C-Stone. Also, I am a percussionist, and I love Terl Bryant's addition to Iona's sound. Unfortunately, it seems doubtfull that I'll ever get to see him play with them again. But I don't want to end on a remorseful note, so I'll just say that I love Iona, I love Jesus Christ, and may He continue to bless us with those willing to do His work. - -Jacob Scherer _______________________________________________________________________ Get your free Celtic Mail address at http://www.celtic.com. ______________ To unsubscribe send an e-mail command to musictus@musictus.com In the body of the message type ONLY the following: unsubscribe iona or visit http://www.gospel.it/iona/mailingl.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 14:18:12 From: Pascale Bellon Gagnon Subject: [iona] hello from Montreal . _ _ _ |(_)| )(_| mailto:musictus@musictus.com Discussion List http://www.gospel.it/iona/ _______________ Hello, I've joined this list a couple of weeks ago and have been enjoying all the posts so I thought I'd come out of lurk mode too :o) My name is Pascale, I'm a 24 years old French speaking Montrealer (Canada). I discovered the band about a year ago through a dear email friend who sent me a tape of Journey into the mourn. I totally fell in love with the music and have been hooked since then. I now own all their CDs, and most of the related solo projects as well. I have rarely been so moved by any band's music in the past, and I admire their incredible musicianship tremendously. I find Iona to be the perfect mixture of beauty and spirituality through technically challenging music. I am also a devoted fan of Terl Bryant's solo stuff, that has brought me similar enjoyment and fulfilment as his former band has. I will miss him in Iona but am very positively curious to hear the new drummer boy :o) I hope with all my heart that Terl has the intention of releasing more albums of his own. If anyone knows anything about it, please tell me! :o) Both his and Iona's music have impacted me in unexpected ways in regards to my spiritual beliefs and journey and for that I will forever be grateful. My favorite Iona CD is probably Heaven's bright Sun for the magnificent song selection and awesome performance. BtS and JitM are second favorites, and I can't imagine ever getting tired of hearing them. Iona is definitely of the lifetime enjoyment category! Other bands that I love dearly are Marillion, Genesis and Yes. Well I think that's it for now. Take care all, and happy Iona listening!
