Personally I found it very disappointing, mellow, laid back and although I am not against this (I tend not to read too much into the lyrics) it is very hymn like i.e. a deep religious message. Track wise there is lots of old ground covered too, for example Be Thou My Vision, When I Survey and others. I don't know what I was expecting - but the album certainly isn't as good as I thought it could have been. Guess I wanted an Iona album and it isn't ! It is kind of like gathering together all your favourite musicians and not using their full potential. Just my thoughts - other people may love it. Beyond These Shores remains my #1 favorite Iona album, as well as my #1 favorite album, period! It also took on an additional special place in my life, as it was an album I listened to the morning of my wedding day. It is a breathtaking album that is so well sequenced and performed that I feel like I am transported to Ireland walking among God's beautiful creation and worshipping Him. Few albums will ever attain this kind of greatness. In fact, if I had to name a #2 album that came close to duplicating this wonderment, it would be Iona again with the Journey Into The Morn album (especially the song, "Encirling"). Few in mainstream music (except maybe U2 during their October, War, and The Unforgettable Fire period) has created such moving music. Anybody else feel the same? > Now that you mention it... very nicely done, thanks for the tip! Very interesting phenomenon going on here... As for me, JitM was my favorite, then a tie maybe between Iona and BoK, and BTS was originally in last place! But over the past months BTS has definitiely moved up to first place as well. Maybe because it was "the least known" by me, and so was like listening to a "new" Iona album. But I think it is an album which just grows on you over time. I think it's the mellowest of the Iona albums, though certainly not *every* song on it is mellow. Take, for example, "Brendan's Voyage (Navagatio)" and "Brendan's Return". These songs represent yet another "theme and variation" on BTS. Just like much of the great classical music, and then also much of the great preg. music of the 70s, the recurrence of a theme draws the whole piece together, offers continuity. I like an album like this, rather than most albums which are just collections of scattered unrelated songs, usually only grouped by the time the artist wrote them. Would love to read other's insights into Iona albums musically, especially other "theme and variation" occurences. I tend to be a big fan of theming, grouping related songs together on a CD, and the all important transition between tracks where one song crescendos and ends and the next kicks in. This is why Iona is such an unusual exception on my list of favorites - right there in between groups that tend to grab all the radio play and I am noticing a number of folks on this list kinda recent (like Jars of Clay and dc Talk). Iona is mellower than I tend to prefer, but they have a different draw for me - it's a sort of trick in using various instruments to fill in the gaps instead of relying on volume or speed. So they tend to reward the more patient listener. Guess I'm just rambling, trying to reconcile my mellow side with my pop/rock side. Does anyone else ever find themselves trying to do this? - --Divad ______________ To unsubscribe send an e-mail command to musictus@musictus.com In the body of the message type ONLY the following: unsubscribe iona or visit http://www.gospel.it/iona/mailingl.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 20:44:41 -500 From: "Eric Reynolds" Subject: Re: [iona] BTS whistle melodies . _ _ _ |(_)| )(_| mailto:musictus@musictus.com Discussion List http://www.gospel.it/iona/ _______________ I must admit that although BTS has been my favorite Iona CD for several various reasons, I too have recently noticed the Prayer on the Mountain theme in other tracks on the CD. (By the way, this same theme can be found in Iona's soundtrack for the BBC's "Snowdonia" documentary.) For me, BTS is my favorite because of its thematic qualities - not only musically, but also lyrically - the whole "stepping out in faith" and total reliance and trust in God message from the story of St Brenden. The CD came out right about the time that my family and I had to make some difficult choices. Thus, songs like "Edge of the World" and "Burning Like Fire" have deep personal meaning for me. I agree that it's a mite "mellower" or "milder" than other albums, but there are few songs out there that match the intensity or drama of "Bird of Heaven" or "Beachy Head". ______________ To unsubscribe send an e-mail command to musictus@musictus.com In the body of the message type ONLY the following: unsubscribe iona or visit http://www.gospel.it/iona/mailingl.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Apr 1999 00:50:51 -0700 From: Aaron J Edwards Subject: [iona] Clannad Lyrics . _ _ _ |(_)| )(_| mailto:musictus@musictus.com Discussion List http://www.gospel.it/iona/ _______________ Man, listening to MAir'e Brennan's harp playing on the journey into the morn cd is really something else.
