I can send as attachment to email or as part of the text as email. To get your friend started you might try the following book. Roy, James Charles. Islands of Storm, Chester Springs, PA: DuFour Editions, Inc., 1991. It is well written and is in the form of a travel digest, covering the main monastic settlements with historical background. The areas covered are Inishmurray, Iona, and Inishkea North. Hope this all helps. High King of heaven, my victory won. May I see heavn's joys, oh bright heaven's sun. By the way, did anyone else see Mike Haughton on 'First Light' on BBC 1 yesterday morning? He accompanied Paul Field on two numbers. A lovely surprise for a Sunday morning! Cool though. If you want to see the whole thing take off the /holding.htm . Since it had been VERY dull around here lately, Why don't we all intruduce ourselves and tell our favorite Iona album. I'll start... I am Aaron from Iowa (usa), I'm 17 and trying to finish school, work full time and play guitar in two bands (my band, eureka! and the band at Church) I like my band a whole lot better... I first heard Iona about 2 years ago when the local CHR station played Irish Day and I was hooked. My favorite Iona album is Book of Kells, then JTM, then HBS and the rest after that. Who moves that the new studio album is enhanced with QuickTime video of songs and interviews, etc. The only problem is that if it is enhanced, then the music time will have to be shortened, so I think they'd better just have a double disk... I have been asked by our minister to devise a "Celtic" style service, that could be used as a family service. I have quite a bit of material by David Adam, Ray Simpson et all, but I am having difficulty devising a central theme that would be particularly orientated around the family/children. If any of you have devised (or just have any suggestions) such a service, I would be grateful for any comments/ideas you may have. Thanks James. PS - As this is not strictly Iona orientated, I would be grateful if you would mail any suggestions directly to me rather than via the group. I was recently trawling through a CD suppliers catalog, when I came across the following CD. Iona - Live 1996. It was shown as an import from both Holland and Germany. It also carried a pretty hefty price tag of $44.95 + shipping. Now I suspect that this is a bootleg CD, but I was just so surprised to see anything new/unusual available at all. Does anyone know anything about this CD. You know, track listing, quality etc. I would give my eye teeth for a good live version of Lindisfarne or Encircling (to mention but a few) on CD. I just wish that Iona would keep all Iona fans going through the drought, sorry sabbatical with a few releases even if they were only limited editions available postally only ! After an initial disappointment that the female vocal was not Joanne, I quickly grew to enjoy the new voice and both cds. They have a much quieter feel but with "Iona" touches in the sound. I was interested to see that they were available in the WIRELESS catalog (a catalog for National Public Radio - USA) as well as in the Spirit & Sound record club. I think any fan of IONA should give them a listen. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Feb 1998 10:30:30 +0100 From: "Charles Crossley, Jr." Subject: iona Re: Unknown Iona CD . _ _ _ |(_)| )(_| mailto:musictus@musictus.com James wrote: >Iona - Live 1996. I like to thoroughly listen to it to analyze it every way from Sunday...here's my $.02: 1) I Love how the bass parts are way up front in the mix! I am a bass player, and that's one of the best bass mixes I've heard. Better than the Iona studio bass mixes. (Incidentally, the JITM show I went to, Phil's bass was as smooth as butter...asked the engineer what effects on the bass??...he said "Just compression". That's why Alembic's cost $4000!!!!Anybody giving one away...;D ) 2) I think the first disk is fantastic, the energy from the crowd really pumps up the band, and the song sequence is excellent! I wonder if someone knows if "Flight of the Wild Goose" was in that same live sequence( after Turning Tide & Treasure), or was that a different show & then spliced in? It's seems to me to be spliced in... 3) I really dig the bass part in the Today intro...I also dig the slapping & muted slapping later in the song...cool chops Phil 4) I'm really bummed with disk 2, because my favorite songs (HBS & Bi-Se Mo Shuil II) are there, and it seems like the energy is lost on those songs, I cant put my finger on it, but I was just dissapointed in the way it came off live - i liked both at the show I went to, but...oh well - I will however say that the 7/4 riff at then end of BSMS II was super tight, as it was at my show, and shows the fabulous technical playing ability of the whole band -- you try playing that at tempo for 2:30 and see how your hand feels when youre done!!! 5) I honestly thought the drums & percussive instruments were miked horribly! I've seen Terl play twice, and I don't hear things on that CD that I KNOW he plays!! The man is incredible! I also don't like the way the tambourine keeps going in & out on Today, but probably because whoever is doing it is moving back and forth in & out of mike range... Overall, a fabulous album, with some very minor dissapointments...I have been excessively busy, and have not read most posts due to time constraints. I gather that the band are taking a break, and will return to the studio sometime in the future?? I look forward to the next release & the next tour! Thanks also to whoever picked up this listserv...I do appreciate it, although I rarely comment on it (see above paragraph), and I enjoy seeing how music & lyric impact each of us differently, and how we all express it. As you can tell I'm a music tech freak. Sorry... God's Blessing on all Stu ------------------------------ End of iona-digest V98 #3 ************************* -digest
