For all you oldy fans I have only seen them at Band on the Wall, Manchester (4 times) and The Christian Alliance Festivial once. So this was a new venue for me too see them. Like the Bonn concert (from the other mail) they started off a bit nervously, but the crowd was amazing the place was packed, far more than for the illustrious 'Ocean Colour Scene' I saw in Stuttgart 2 weeks ago. Iona buzzed off it. They just went off on the fly at the end for ages like I haven't seen in a long while. They said 'Nobody whistles as loud as us lot in Germany so far'. Anyway they went off after a mad 10min Bagpipe/guitar solo with funky bass and amazing drums. They chant for encore was incredible. They came on did anopther 15 mins as by now the crowd was 100% focused on the band and loving every minute. They tried to go off again but the crowd were having none of it. Now you may not believe this but they came on and sang the old american rock wriggleys song 'All Right Now'. By my judgement they had never played this together before, it was brilliant Joanne didn't sing, just the guys and no-one could quite believe their ears. There were flute/pipes solos anyway Im getting excited about it so I'll go but they really were brilliant, as were the crowd. Would be intersted to here if anyone has heard them do 'Allright now' before. Sure, and Iona is the name of the college I went to, and an isand on the Hudson river not too far north of New York City. I was joking about "stealing" the name, actually. I said this sort of "tongue-in-cheek" knowing this secret tidbit of information which I "maliciously" withheld... The U.S. Washington-based band Iona (see http://www.shirenet.com/IONA/theband.htm) was formed in 1986. "Our" Iona was formed in 1990. So if anyone "stole" the name it was "our" Iona! Of course your point *is* well taken, Rob - no one "owns" that name so it can't be stolen. But I wonder a bit, if another band named themselves "Chicago" or "Boston" would this be OK? Maybe I'll name my band "The Beatles" ... after all no one's using that name for a band right now. ;-) All kidding aside, it seems to be obvious that there was no attempt to willfully borrow (without asking) the name of either band Iona. I'm sure there's lots of bands out there with the same name. In fact, I have a sax-player friend who was in 3 separate bands all named "Tempest" - - and all totally unrelated to each other. That 5/4 groove is insane!! It brought me back to the days of Rush's "Camera Eye" from the Moving Picturs album. (I don't know where precisely.) There are several illustrations in there that upon first glance make you wonder: what does this picture have to do with the Gospel story? Sometimes the monk/scribes threw in an occasional picture for fun; other times they were thematic. I have seen at least one picture of two animals engaged in a struggle or two men pulling beards or hair that were meant to symbolise conflict. We can't always guess at the Celtic mindset at that time or what those illustrations symbolised in that culture. When I was at Cornerstone this summer working the Iona table in the big vendor tent, I had a guy come up and ask about that particular work of Celtic art. He was rather concerned as he felt it had a rather cultic or even "demonic" look to it. I explained to him the origins of such artwork and we got into a little discussion about the early Celtic church, judging things or people by appearances (I think it was his first time at Cornerstone and he was a little overwhelmed), and Christians and art in general. I will be unsubscribing from this list for a short time during the holidays in an effort to cut down on my e-mail. The bad news is that during 1998 Iona are taking a year's sabbatical from touring to assess their vision, improve support structures, renew their vision and work on the next album. They have one UK gig pencilled in for May 1998, and I would guess that a UK tour would take precedence over a US one. I suspect that the earliest they might come across is Cornerstone 98. Hey, this wouldn't happen to be the same "Mary Simko" from AM960 would it? Just kidding, I caught the address and knew immediately. My name is Scott McMeekan, I live in Elkhart, and I've been following Iona since 1992 when I got a copy of _The Book of Kells_. I've been practically obsessed with them since. Okay, so maybe that's a bit strong, but you know what I mean. : ) Iona, as I'm sure you know by now, is taking 1998 as a sabbatical. I'm bummed and so are all the rest of us, but we realize that they need to be with their families as well. In any case, I've been working with Iona's booking agent, Kathy Bunker out of Chicago, to get them to come to South Bend. There have been two problems in the past: 1) When they come to America they're only here for about 2-3 weeks, so the venues need to be somewhat close together. One place they always play is the Cornerstone music festival, a sort of Christian "Woodstock" if you will, held in southern Illinois. I did manage to see Iona in Chicago the day after Cornerstone two summers ago. (WHAT A SHOW!!) Anyway, I think that we can overcome this "problem" if they continue to do Cornerstone. The second problem (and this is the REAL problem) is that they are not sure that Iona's following around here is big enough to sell enough tickets to make any money. See, this Cornerstone thing happens around the July 4th holiday, and Kathy Bunker doesn't think that it can happen without the Notre Dame students being on campus. I told her I thought we could pull it off with the right promotion, but so far no luck. Drop me a note sometime and tell me how you found out about Iona and what you think of their music! It's always great to find someone else who appreciates their unbelievable music. Take care, and God's blessings on you and your family this Christmas! Iona has no U.S. tour planned (they had one in 1994, one in 1996, and a short one in the summer of 1997 - I was lucky enough to see them all 3 times). They have a series of concerts planned in Germany this month, and then are taking a full one year sabbatical for 1998 - no concerts *anywhere*!!! Maybe you can see about getting them booked in 1999. I also am hoping to get Iona to come to my school, Iona College, just north of New York City. I just love the idea of promoting it as "Iona at Iona." :-) I've spoken to Kathy Bunker, who is Iona's booking agent for the U.S. Kathy even mentioned it to the band, and they like the idea. But I have yet to contact the *right* person at the college to plan such an event. But now I have plenty of time since 1999 is 13 months away.
