These chords sound close to me, but I'm open to alternate voicings! The chord names make it look more complicated than it is. Another way to view it: start on the bass note and keep stacking thirds until you reach the 7th of the right-hand chord. I guess you could also call them 13th chords. >So has anyone had any success with transcribing Iona pieces? I'm a bit of >a chord man myself, and so I lose the more complex bits when I try to >reproduce them, but I can generally fudge along to most of the "straight" >songs. I haven't gotten to the point of actually writing anything on manuscript paper. Most of the Iona songs I've attempted have a fairly straightforward harmony (above chords being an exception!). The time signatures, melodies and orchestration are where most of the complexity lies. I used to spend my spare time (when I had spare time -- before having kids :-) transcribing pieces by Keith Emerson (with widely varying degrees of accuracy!). I also like the earlier Yes music. Most Emerson pieces stand on their own as a solo performance, but Yes' pieces generally don't sound well unless performed by a band. I think much of Iona's pieces are the same way - -- the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. You can extract Dave's or Joanne's or Troy's parts, but much is lost when played on their own. Kind of like focusing in on one instrument's parts in a symphony -- you can appreciate the detail it adds to the overall piece, but you miss a lot of the big picture without the rest of the instruments! I just realized that it was just about a year ago that I first heard Iona & it's been a great year musically, building up their catalogue, seeing them twice in concert, and trying to learn to play tin whistle! I've been listening to Iona since Feb 1991 and am still yet to see them in concert. I enjoy the music and lyrical content immensely. However, as someone who lives in Australia there is often some combination of amusement and frustration when reading about the latest events and information on the listserv. So, I thought I'd give you some Australian news... Most of you will be aware that Iona really only have one concept clip, Treasure, off Beyond These Shores. In 1994, believe it or not, I paid the Australian record company handling Iona product to get their act together and import a broadcast quality copy. (It still took many months) Not much happened - it got a few runs on an early Sunday morning show, Swordfish, but not much else. However, "Treasure" is going to get a run as a Christian Television Association spot in the very near future (imagine 60, 30 & 15 second versions on commercial television!) For those of you not in Australia, CTA spots are free-to-air 'advertisements' that, until quite recently, have had a (justified) reputation for being very, *very* bad - so hopefully this and a combination of other music spots (using DC Talk, Steven Curtis Chapman, Dakoda Motor Co., and possibly Big Tent Revival & Rebecca St James as well) will change things a little... Recently CTA were in the news for a (sort-of) anti-gambling ad that was rejected by one of the 3 major networks. (details on www.shootthemessenger.com.au) The ad concerned had a voice-over tag that said "Where your treasure is, that's where your heart will be". The point is, having rejected the ad, Channel 9 had nothing new to play - but it has been suggested to run the Iona spot instead, which would be great! Well, OK, the Treasure clip might be old - but this is the land where we get Christian albums 4 or 5 months after the rest of the world! (unless it's Jars of Clay or Amy Grant etc.) - ----- Now for some irony - back in October I was heading to England to learn about some specialist camerawork for a few months. Naturally it had crossed my mind that (finally!) I might get to see Iona in concert... Guess what? The trip was postponed until next year...!!! Oh well... ;-P - ------ Some background on my lurking... (skip if disinterested/busy/dead/lurkophobic) * sometime mid to late 1996: I joined the list, unsubscribing and resubscribing from time to time when things got too busy. (actually I did send a couple of posts during this time - very unlurkish behaviour, I know!) * early June: I unsubscribed from the list because I had quit my television job of over ten years and I didn't have e-mail access at home. * September: I managed to finally get myself an ISP, but software problems (including incompetent people at my ISP) meant that I only managed to be online long enough to subscribe to the new list and then finding it impossible to reconnect until... * late October: when a *lot* of messages were waiting to be read, and I have been too busy to be up to date with the list until last weekend. - ------ More sorry stuff that I've learned about recently... Rich Mullins (my next choice in concert must-see's) was killed on my 30th Birthday and also, to top it all off, the video to Irish Day (my favourite song on JITM) looks like it will never see the light of any day, Irish or otherwise. As an Avid non-linear editor who loves doing stuff to music (eg. I did an Australian Open tennis clip to the 9/8 exerpt of Bird of Heaven some years ago) I find this particularly galling. Anyway, I'll shut up for now. This is far too long a post. (Lurk mode: resumed) Chi-R(e)oh, Gilligan. P.S. Thank you to Dennis Reulbach for helping me get up to date. P.P.S. To Bill, yes, exactly the same thoughts cross my mind listening to Lindisfarne re Mike Oldfield. P.P.P.S.
