It is not about "OUR" Iona I have been and read the website you mention, and it certainly seems to be about "our" Iona (or have I been thinking about the wrong Iona ?). I enclose an extract from the text so you will see what I mean. >>Tollbooth - Tell us about your new live record. Bainbridge - One of the reasons for doing the album was that it was just myself, Joanne, and bits when we did the first album. We didn't have a regular rhythm section or anything, although Terl played on the album. Iona has become very much a band since then. We've had time to develop the material and I think the tracks from the first album are much more developed and exciting on the live album. Donockley - There was also demand from the fans for a live album. Everywhere we went, people were asking for it. The studio albums didn't give, getting back to the development thing, a full picture. Hogg - We also simply were not in a position to start work on another studio album. And that wasn't going to be the case for maybe another year. By doing the live album, we were able to sort of fill what would otherwise have been a long gap between studio albums.>> Hope this is OK, it is well wortha full read, I found it quite an insight iton the thinking and direction of the band. I suspect that the years sabbatical that the band are now taking is for a mixture of reasons: 1) To be with their families - Some having new additions. 2) To start the creative writing proccess for the next album 3) To decide on their general direction. ie are they going to focus as much on the Christian Music scene or push themselves more into the secular music arena (but still maintaining their christian roots in their music). I guess only time will tell, but I suspect that the band have a few difficult decisions to make during their sabbatical, and that are thoughts should be with them. Excuse me, gang, for not checking out my facts first and being so "reactionary." I just got home from a trip to Arkansas last night, read my mail, and responded without looking. My mistake! The feeling I get after reading the interview is that Joanne and the guys were tired (which they were) and rather disillusioned about parts of the music industry. I pray that Iona will find God's wisdom on this, and find their way through it to whatever place God has for them in music. Ministers need rest and refreshing, and ministry themselves. I just got Heaven's Bright Sun on Saturday. I cried at every song. God used them to heal much in me, and to help me come to a understanding of what I need to focus on in ministry. Their music has always been an inspiration, encouragement, and healing balm to my soul, and I soaked it in on Sunday afternoon! Their place in the kingdom is unique, as are all our places. But they are a fresh voice spoken (sung) with skill and passion. In the Celtic tradition of storytelling, I see them as close friends of David, the King and Prophet and Psalmist. Remember: You can't tell by how ya feel, how ya are. May the peace of the Father, and the love of the Son, and the power of the Holy Spirit encircle and enfold you, and keep you this day. I've seen Iona 3 times over about 5 years - twice at the Greenbelt Festival. I guess I like their great music and sound theology... Anyway, I saw them at the Bournemouth Winter Gardens recently... if I don't get the titles right, please forgive... They kicked off with Wisdom, Irish Day and Today the grass is greener... Others included Treasure, The Island, Lindisfarne, Edge of the World, Chi-Ro... There was a small drama with Joanne's mike at one point, so she subtly switched to another, abandoning her keyboard... but not after Troy had told us all a joke to pass the time! They also joked about the length of Encircling, and said they hoped we'd survive it... They did a couple of great reels, and played really tightly. The one thing that nagged me all evening was that they didn't do When I Survey, which is very special to me... until the encore! It was one of those hairs-stand-up-on-neck moments as Troy played e-bow guitar... OK, I know I can't remember all the songs they did, but it seemed like they did all the main ones I like... (I'm no Iona expert) One thing that impresses me is how GREAT the mix was! How do these guys do it?! .................. Other stuff about me: I like playing electric guitar and piano, making my own MIDI music, and writing songs for my own band (we're a Christian group called 'Tyburn' - no recordings yet). Music I like (not in order): Iona, Phil Keaggy, Joe Satriani, Bruce Cockburn, U2, Aerosmith, Julian Bream, etc etc ... I'm also trying to do a PhD at Bournemouth University in speech synthesis...
