The notes have quite a different attack from a bass. If you listen carefully to this track you will see what I mean. The note is sounded when the player hammers onto the string. Sounds more 'piano-like' for want of a better description. Eternity-No Beginning No End (Book of Kells) Nick actually plays a WAL fretless bass for most of this track and I always assumed the harmonics were also on the bass. This is still may favourite IONA track. The combination of David Fitzgerald and Nick Begg's playing here is out of the world (as the intended it to be !). BOK is still my favourite IONA CD because it has both David Fitzgerald AND Nick Beggs. Lux Aeterna Nick plays lots of Stick on this and it sounds to me as if he processes the sound. If you have the CD read the cover notes. It tells you what tracks he plays stick on and what tracks he plays bass. A Woman and A Man (Belinda Carlisle) Again Nick plays excellent bass and Stick and again it does say on the cover notes which track he plays Stick on. What a talented player ! None of the bass parts really stand out but rather complement the overall sound and provide perfect support for the vocals. If you still have difficulty differentiating a Stick from a Bass, download some of the sound bites from the web pages mentioned in earlier posts. Nick played on BOK and BTS. The bass player on Iona was Tim Harries. Um, 'fraid not. That'll be the marvellous Tim Harries doing his stuff on the bass... Nick is only on 'The Book of Kells' & 'Beyond These Shores' Listen to 'Mark - The Lion' & 'Temptation' for out-and-out Stick; on the former, as the percussion and atmospheric keys build up, the Stick kicks in! Powerful stuff. 'Temptation' features Stick-generated 'whale sounds' (Nick's definition, not mine!) 'Matthew the Man' *may be* Stick, but it could also be Nick's Wal bass. 'Chi Rho' was played live with the Stick, and it's probably Stick on the album... As for 'Beyond These Shores,' Nick played more bass on that album, but 'Bird of Heaven' features the Stick during the quiet part in which Joanne starts to sing (there's also an Ashbory bass on the wild intro--a weird little rubbery-stringed bass). If you want more info, check out my Stick page as a 'launchpad' for other sites etc. There used to be some samples on the StickWire page too. http://www.netkonect.co.uk/~flump/stick.html Hope that helps! Linda flies with a glider club for folks with disabilities called "Freedom's Wings", and i hope to make a video about their joyful flying, to the accompaniment of "Inside My Heart". when "Inside My Heart" started, there was an airplane sparkling in the sunset... there were other tracks that "fit" in ways i cannot even describe now. it was as if God made a live music video of the entire album. i was moved to tears... just wanted you to know, that i felt joy - and thankfulness to the Lord for bringing us sunsets, and for bringing us the wonderful talent of the band called Iona. they will always have a place inside my heart! perhaps i had just a little glimpse of Heaven's Bright Sun???? 8) - -john John Baxter NextLevel Systems jbaxter@voicenet.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Oct 1997 00:20:34 -0400 (EDT) From: Nicea@aol.com Subject: Re: iona Top Fives Today Dancing on the Wall Irish Day Everything Changes Encircling ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Oct 1997 08:58:00 +0100 From: jy-stewart Subject: Re: iona Lux Aeterna > From: Benedict Poole > Greetings one and all > > I'm trying to get hold of Dave Fitzgerald's Lux Aeterna here in the UK. > Before I give up on my local area, and start charging round London, can > anyone tell me if it's possible to get the album via mail order in the UK? > I've been down the usual Christian bookshop avenues, with no success. Nick Beggs certainly plays Chapman Stick on the video version of "The Island" and I guess that's what's stuck in my memory. Curiously, the video track has the same bass sound as the CD, even though it's a separate (live) recording of the song. - -- ****************************************************************** * Clive Hayball Next Generation Products, * * Nortel plc (Harlow Labs.), * * London Road, * * Harlow, U.K. * * Tel. I tried & it keeps crashing my web browser (Netscape 3.0 under Windows 3.11). I get the normal HTML file okay, but the imbedded audio file, after loading, causes me problems. Once I let the audio file fully load, it sounds OK, but then I cannot access any further sites on the web (nt even subsequent page's of Nick's site). When I shut down Netscape & Trumpet winsock, it then crashes with a General Protection Fault. Any clues, or similar experiences?
