April '95), and was interested in this snippet: "Another project bubbling away for later in the year is a collaboration with singer Sal Solo. This will be an album of 'Taize' songs, to be arranged and played by Sal and us. 'Taize' is a place in France which has become synonymous with a style of sacred songs which are very calm and meditative. Their repetitive lyrics and structures are designed to focus the listener's attention on coming into God's presence and are widely used particularly in the Catholic church. We see this as an exiting opportunity to build bridges between the Christian traditions." I know Nick Beggs has worked with Sal, but I wonder what came of this project between Iona and Sal? The venue itself is in a leisure centre and doubles as a sports hall, but still came across as a reasonable good venue. I was right in front of the PA so I have no idea what the sound was like in the rest of the venue. After the oven of Reading we were in the slightly chilled fridge of Maidstone. Not that cold, but colder than some. There was no support for this gig, so we got a longer set, and this time I wrote it down (my memory is not all...what was I saying...oh yes my memory sometimes requires jogging to remember stuff like set lists).: Irish Day Today Flight Of The Wild Goose Angel Of God Everything Changes Encircling Burning Like Fire I Will Give My Love An Apple Interval The Island Edge Of The World Lindisfarne Columcille Heaven's Bright Sun Chi-Rho Bi-Se i Mo Shuil - Part 2 Treasure Revelation Doodle Reels No real surprises except the new bit 'Doodle' which was a short instrumental piece that is obviously in its formative stages, thus the title (taken from the set list). The other thing to note is that B-Se i Mo Shuil is simply called '11-8' on the set list, obviously a reference to its time signature. The band seemed to be in a good mood, maybe left over from Reading and attacked the whole set with vigour. I was half fearing that the somewhat static crowd would lead to a more sedate gig, but the audience did applaud loudly between songs and a few brave souls got up and danced during Reels (I was right at the front and felt a bit too exposed to do so, but I did try and boogie in my seat during the entire show). I would like to think that the few of us that did show their enjoyment during the songs helped the band along. Certainly the band finally left the stage to a standing ovation and would quite happily stayed for another encore. Poor Dave had fun during the first few numbers, first he broke a string (I believe) during 'Flight' and had to swap guitars very quickly (it happened just before his solo!). And he had a slight problem during Encircling, when it took him a few bars to notice that his acoustic wasn't plugged in. The show itself was perhaps not as good as Reading, but this is my last Iona show on this tour, so I was determined to enjoy it what ever. All of the songs were well up to scratch, with only a few songs like Columcille being slightly spoiled by the high end on the PA being a bit shrill (a problem I suspect of the audio brightness of the room). A few observations. I like the longer ending to Revelation, with the whole band giving all there worth. The new bit 'Doodle' sounds promising, with yet more Celtic influences showing there up, having a definite Capercaille feel to it. Everything Changes definitely needs the band to be full into it to come across strongly, thankfully it did tonight, as it did at Reading. Dave had a microphone set up in front of his keyboard, which he never used. Was it there in case he needed it for his acoustic, was it there to pick up the sound of his fingers hitting the synth keys to help the live sound, was he planning on joining in and doing his first solo vocal spot, who knows? So after Solihull the band will have finished their Spring tour, one of the longest Spring tours in history I believe (although the circumstances for this are sad and I for one feel sympathy for the band and Joanne for having to cancel most of the first attempt at the tour). Hopefully the next time we see them they will have a new album and Joanne and Troy can stop doing their double act to promote sales of HBS, and probably do the same act to sell the next one, (albeit with a slightly different arrangement to keep us on our toes :-). Review by John Blake from the Atlanta Journal dated 10-11-97.... "Iona, 'Journey Into the Morn' The voice of Joanne Hogg, Iona's lead singer, is worth the price of admission alone. This album is a superb synthesis of songwriting and musicianship of the highest order. But Hogg's voice takes it over the top. Drenched in dreamy synthesizers, acoustic gutiar and floating background vocals, Hogg sings about her Chriatain faith and Celtic mythology. At times she sings in English and Gaelic, the native Irish language. But it doesn't matter. After listening to 'Divine Presence,' a song consisting just of Hogg's voice, guitar and synthesizer, I realized that Hogg could sing from a Waffle House menu and still sound good. Sometimes the songs get a little too dreamy, but Hogg's voice brings it all down to earth." This came from a special section on Celtic music. For our overseas members the reference to Waffle House is a resturant/truck stop type place to eat. "Good Food Fast." The venue was excellent, and for the first time in my experience at an Iona concert, everyone was seated. Iona were unsupported which is the best way cos you get more of their music. The set they did was the same as posted earlier by Martin Dean from the Maidstone concert, with one exception which I will mention in a moment. The group were given a great introduction by the organiser (P.Singh)but let me feeling slightly sad. He said that this would be the last concert by the group for "some time as they were taking a sabbatical". Nothing more was said about this, no-one in the group mentioned it during the performance. However Joanne made a cryptic comment about how so much had happened in the short time between the arranging of this concert and it taking place. I was left with the feeling that something has been happening behind the scenes and the group were taking a break to take stock of things (my own perceptions). The performance was brilliant. The sound was good, the stage lighting was at its most effective, giving some really atmospheric shadows and highlights particularly to Joanne. Troy was his usual witty self. He took opportunity to promote the HBS album frequently and he has great rapport with the audience. Troy did have a bit of difficulty from time to time with his Uillean pipes, but this produced the most memorable spontaneous action in the encore. Joanne was singing superbly, indeed Troy and Mike supported the vocals and several tracks sounded better than I have ever heard, with the whole group as one. Mike looked really cool and played as excellent as always, in fact he took more part this time than I have seen before. He played the whistle for "Colmcille" allowing Troy to concentrate with his pipes. Terl was Terl on the drums; simply the best percussionist I have ever seen. His headphones seemed to keep slipping though, causing him a slight distraction. Dave looked as though he was really having fun. He was always involved and he kept coming forward to the front of the stage. Phil is the COOL one. He keeps in the background but his bass is something else. As the group came back for the encore, Joanne said that what they did next depended on Troy getting his pipes working. Troy quipped that if they didn't work they would sing "Alright now " by Free. As Troy and one of their technical support team worked on the pipes, Dave strummed a few notes from "Alright now". The crowd cheered wildly. Then Terl started the drum intro and Dave took up the chords. Before we knew it, the whole group were playing "Alright now" and Troy who was working on his pipes started singing the words. The audience were on their feet singing and dancing. It was brilliant and brings up the hairs on the neck just to think about it now. Dave took the guitar riff in the middle of the song and then as Troy carried on singing "..its alright now.." he said "it is now its working" referring to his pipes. The song finished to huge applause. The set was finished with Revelation and Reels. The band left the audience cheering and stamping feet for more and more.... but sadly that was it....but it was magical, a moment to Treasure. If you were not fortunate enough to be there, I hope that this gives you a small flavour of what it was like. regards to you all paul rouse ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Oct 1997 00:19:29 -0400 (EDT) From: Jilliemae@aol.com Subject: Re: iona Iona at Solihull concert - review Thank you, Paul, and you other guys over there in England, for sharing those reviews from the last couple of weeks with us. Each concert and location has its own atmosphere and "plusses & minuses." I think it really does make a difference to the artist in how he or she is received by the audience. (Probably to a lesser extent though if you are as talented and well-rehearsed as Iona ;) I don't have my Friends of Iona newsletter out (the snail mail version) so I don't know what other venues they had planned this fall? Is the sabbatical you spoke of a planned one, I wonder? If not, we should be in prayer for the band and their families, don't you think? A little bug in the mailserver configuration was causing a returned message from certain servers only. Now all subscribers are receiving the posts! I am going to write a new website for Rediscovery, one of the band I produce. I would like to have more material to work on, so I'm giving away some CDs for only 15 US$ (shipping worldwide included) to those who wants to listen to it and will send me a review or just some comments on the album. For those who don't know the Rediscovery album, it's a record featuring Mike Haughton on saxophones and Luca Genta who played bass for Iona on a couple of tours. Many interesting sounds reminds the Iona style. Please contact me privately if you are interested or, if you already have the CD, you can post the comments to the list.
