I'm near Philadelphia, and my beloved Linda is near New York, so I'm most interested in dates in that vicinity. But would drive or fly if necessary!!! Discovered Iona out of a deep love for the music of Enya, and hearing that a Christian band had done some work with Enya's sister Maire. My favorite five tracks??? wow that's difficult, and would vary depending on the person I wanted to encourage to listen (or perhaps even to come to the Lord). Well... here's a possibility: Inside my Heart Lindisfarne Iona (live version with Joanne's narration) Journey into the Morn When I Survey the Wondrous Cross remember that I'm new, and only have "Journey into the Morn" "On Distant Shores", and "Heaven's Bright Sun". I'm looking forward to hearing all their wonderful works. Although needless to say I have never met them, I feel like the members of Iona are brothers and sisters to us all. I hope to use "Inside my Heart" as well as several Enya tracks, in a little home video about a glider club where my Linda flies - they use specially equipped sailplanes to let folks with disabilities fly. We're not sure where Iona will be in the states next time they are here. Iona just did a 9 day tour here in the States in July. Their concerts included Cornerstone Festival (Bushnell IL), VA Beach, VA; Washington DC; and Hurffville NJ (not too far from Philadelphia). There were many of us on this list that drove many miles to hear them! When I saw Iona for the first time (that was on Flevo Totaal Festival 93 in NL), Terl used that 20 litre yellow plastic bucket when playing "Today" (as you can read in the CD booklet). Last year I saw them twice (in NL and in GER). The Flevo 96 concert was nice because the band that played before was "Johnny Q Public". That was perhaps one of the ugliest things I've ever seen. And so it was necessary to heve an Iona concert afterwards for enjoying and relaxing :-) The 96 concert in Berlin was in a Jazz Club. I think that was not the best place for that sort of music. But the audience was quite close to the stage, so we could see everything (especially Troy playing the uillean pipes). bye --- Johannes Koch http://www.physik.tu-berlin.de/~koch/ ILR (Institute of Aerospace Engineering) TU Berlin, GERMANY IRC-Nick: Waldbaer on #ixthys * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * In te, Domine, speravi; non confundar in aeternum. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Oct 1997 23:44:12 +0000 From: Martin Dean Subject: Re: my first iona concert My first Iona concert was back in 1989, at the Greenbelt festival. For an intro gig as it was strange as it was at 1PM on a very hot August afternoon. The gig took place in a small marquee with loads of us stuck cross legged on the hard ground to allow those at the back to see, so cramp was part of the experience. As well as my first concert I latter learned this was Joanne's first appearance with Iona as well so it was an historic event. The band comprised Mike, Joanne and David accompanied by Mike sequencer on percussion and some slides of pictures of an unnamed islands (Iona or Lindisfarne I assume). At the time they didn't even have an album out. I had only gone to see them as the Doesn't sound like your perfect setting for an introductory gig. But the music spoke for itself and they returned many times to Greenbelt and I'm sure there success begins with those early gigs. Eight years and (soon) twenty gigs on I'm glad I was at that gig. Lee http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~leehal/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Oct 1997 05:27:45 -0400 (EDT) From: TomBowcock@aol.com Subject: iona Iona on Tour - Bristol 2nd October 1997 Hi Everyone, I promised that I would do a review of this concert, particularly for our friends across "the pond". As they so readily provided the same for us when Iona were over there in July. I don't pretend to be a budding journalist, so apologies for lack of journalistic flair or ability. Tonights Iona concert was held in a converted wool warehouse in Bristol,UK. The Fleece and Firkin is a small venue, with a floor about the size of a small school hall. It is a cosy and intimate setting for an Iona concert, although having a bar all down one side does not make for the most convivial listening. A C sharp cash reigister every few minutes when trying to listen to the equisite music of Iona can be grating at times. The crowd was an eclectic mix of society, with the majority being students from the local University, but also older people in their 60's in attendance as well. Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond their control Iona arrived late, and when we arrived at 7.00pm for a 8.00pm start, the band where still setting up there kit. Joanne on stage in Jeans and white T-shirt grafting with the rest of the stage crew and obviously under pressure. We were then ushered out while the band continued setting up and had a quick sound check. At 9.20pm Iona took to the stage with a very muted response from the audience, it seemed to me that many of the students had most probably not heard of the band before and were there for a night out rather than listen to the band. Indeed the arrogance of one small bunch of students behind me was beyond belief as they proceeded to talk in loud and very annoying voices throughout the first half of the set. However having obviously scored, the dumpy little dwarf packed her bags and dissapeared into the night. But I digress.......... Joanne dressed all in black came on stage last to join the rest of the band as they started their set with "Irish Day" a fine lively song to warm the crowd up. Not that the crowded need much warming up for the 300 people in this small area had ensured that the heat was stifling, and up on stage even worse. This was followed by "Today". To this point the response from most of the crowd was about as warm as cold porridge. The next two songs saw the audience start to respond as they stormed into a blistering version of "Flight of the wild goose" and an incredible and almost overpowering version of "The Island". You really could have thought that Joanne was single handedly breaking the chains that binds mankind. The tempo was brought down then with "Everything Changes". Then a complete surprise (to me at any rate) in the set was the performance of "Encircling". This track is just superb live (although a small amount of feedback and the "poison dwarf" nearly conspired to wreck the atmospherics). However 13 minutes on one track was obviously a bit much for a few of the poor students whose concentration must have been nearer that of a goldfish than a human being, as they slipped back into their own conversations oblivious of the incredible sound that was around them. You almost felt that the band were encircling themselves and calling on God's help and protection. Next followed an instrumental track that I did'nt immeadiately recognise (did anyone else who was there recognise it). This was quickly followed by an excellent version of "Inside my Heart" to close the first set. The heat on stage must have been almost unbearble. Indeed one of my companions (who is a nurse) remarked that Joanne seemed to be in some discomfort and distress at one point. Troy even offered to remove his trousers and perform in his underwear at one point. But despite the great enthusiasm for this novel approach, he perservered. There was a short break during which time those that were not really into the music seemed to disappear. As a result when Iona took to the stage for a second time, the audience was completely different. It was lively and appreciative. They started the second half of the set with "Treasure" , and indeed what a treasure this song is in their set. This set the tone for the whole of what ws to be an absolutely blistering and powerful second half. The next track came as quite a surprise but pleasant surprise all the same as it is one of my favourite Iona tracks, as they launched in the "Beyond these shores" track "Burning like fire". Indeed it did set the crowd on fire as they responded with enthusiasm. This was followed by another all time classic "Lindisfarne". This track was almost beyond belief and must be heard live to be appreciated. the delicacy and balance of the band is unbelievable. I must admit that having never heard them play this track live before and the fact that it was left off of HBS rather made me wonder if perhaps this track did'nt come across so well live. Nothing could be further from the truth. This track sends tingles down the spine even now as I recall the exquisite ethereal flute playing throughout this track. How this never got onto HBS is beyond me, it almost warrants a release in its own right. Next came "Columcille" Troy's virtuosity and energy was amazing. Next came "Heavens Bright Sun". I must admit that this had'nt been one of my favourites until I heard it live. The sonic duel between Troy on the pipes and Dave's wailing guitar was superb as the band were picked up and battered by the wall of sound. Surprise choice of the night must have been "Murlough Bay" a beautiful and haunting track. One of the highlights for me of the evening. One of the bands most popular tracks then followed in "Chi-Rho". Which sounded as always totally brilliant.(and for those interested... yes, Troy plays the accoustic with a capo on rather than obscure open tunning. I could'nt quitemake out which fret, I think Fifth or sixth ?) "No Heart Beats" was next (possibly the weakest track of the evening, but by no means bad). The set was due to be closed (according to the set list at Joannes feet) by "Reels", and what an absolutely stompin version we were treated too. The band had the audience in the palm of their hands as they carried them along with wild enthusiasm. As time was now becomming a factor 11.30pm, the band stayed on stage and played "Bi-Se Mu Shuil Pt 2". Unfortunately it was at this point that time was called on my visit, and I had to leave but according to the set list they should also then have played "When I Survey". What can I say about this band...... I have seen many many bands in my time including some of the biggest names in rock history but the sheer beauty of their music and the incredible musical talent of this band must put them up there with and in many cases above the greatest names. Joannes voice was both powerful and beautiful with a range that I have only seen bettered by Annie Haslam (in the field of rock music at least !!). I think for me sums up the band is Beauty and Power supported by the most amazing musical talent. Here are a group of musicians truly using God's gift of music to the full. If you have'nt seen this band live before, make sure that you do at the very earliest opportunity. If you have seen them before - go see them again. I hope this is OK and will give you at least some of the feel of the evening. I'm sure others will have a different perspective on the evening, but this is my own "personal" feelings as I write some 12 hours later. Frank - Sorry I missed you there, but hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Sorry about the remarks about students(I know not all students are like this) but I am just saying it as I found it.
