Cheers james ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 09:15:39 -0400 (EDT) From: Alastair McLean Subject: iona Nick Beggs sighting ???? (No Iona content) Well as most of you will know, Nick Beggs left Iona circa 1994 taking his trusty Wal basses and Chapman stick with him. Nick contributed some of the most awesome bass and Stick parts to Iona's recorded work. Check out Mathew the Man or Eternity from Book of Kells. The later is among my favourite tracks. Nick adds some beautiful long slides and harmonics that just seem to ring and ring. So I just gave Belinda Carlise's new CD 'A Woman and A Man' a listen (Beware..Iona-phites, Belinda Carlisle will probably not share the same bill with Iona in the near future !). However, Nick provides some really solid bass to all tracks and some Stick too. I had lots of fun playing along with the CD at the weekend. Moreover, I came across a very interesting picture of Belinda in concert in England circa 95-96. http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/3981/bc.html Standing in the shadows, off to the left, is her bass player who is holding a Wal bass. Hard to make out the face of the bass player. But could it be Nick ? Was anyone at the concert and wants to admit to it in these hallowed cyberhalls ? ps My least favourite track from HBS is Today because there appears to be someone learning to play tambourine on that track. best wishes alastair mclean kingston ontario ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 15:38:18 +0200 From: Vaughan Granier Subject: iona Re: Tambourine student on HBS... This brings back memories of my first sessions as a bassist and backing vocalist. Studio nerves are a serious thing, and what sounds sooooo good live - you don't even realise there are errors - comes back to you as "Life's most embarrassing moment" on replay :-) The margin for error is non-existent in music - only, maybe, with a fretless bass can you hide a small pitch error - and I really feel for muso's on a bad night - that precision that you need so desperately just hits the high road, and you are all alone on this BIIIG stage with a BIIIG audience demanding the next to impossible..... - a good song! Pity about it coming through - they should perhaps have mixed it out, but if you're going for the true live sound, then the boo boo's are jsut as important, no? Reminds me of a tape I heard of Linda McCartney trying, and I mean really trying, to play tambourine and sing backing harmonies to "Hey Jude" in one of Paul's concerts. Now THERE is an example of nepotism. The lady cannot, or on that night COULD not, sing a note. It was a huge success on the bootleg market, that tape. But we all have off days, no? __________________________________________________________________ Vaughan Granier Human Resources Manager Phone :+27 11 454 2815 Grinaker Duraset Fax :+27 11 454 1713 Mobile:+27 82 652 1909 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 18:58:10 +0100 From: leehalbert Subject: iona Nick Beggs Further to Alistair's mail about Nick working with Belinda Carlisle the chances are it is Nick in the picture as Nick was Belinda's 'musical director' for about 2 years. 'Recorded in December last year, this double live CD plugs the product gap and acts as a useful summary of Britain's only Christian band that secularists can approach with confidence. Located somewhere between Sirius-period Clannad and 1970s progressive rock, the six piece are clearly bigger than their folk roots, yet smoothly incorporate whistles, pipes and bodhrans with saxophone, electric guitar and keyboard programming - and when they hobnob with Gaelic, the results make complete musical sense, even when words don't. Thus Treasure, Irish Day and Inside My Heart are admirable, direct and grown up pop-tunes, the title track and Bi-Se Mo Shull-Part 2 deliver lengthy instrumental sections without overwhelming the songs, and a snappy selection of previously unrecorded reels sends the troops home happy. Some post-gig jiggery pokery is in evidence, but the immediacy of the live show emerges, intact and Joanne Hogg's voice, in particular, is spectacular.' 4* out of 5* 'Excellent. For my friends who are into Celtic Christianity, I would start with "Encircling" or "Lindisfarne". For more traditional Christians, I would certainly wnat them to hear "When I survey". Some of my friends are grad students in music--classical types. For them, I would focus on the CD "Book of Kells", because it is so clearly conceptual, so well thought out, so sophisticated.
