The band also mutates into another (imho, better) band called 'Hydro', producing a different kind of techno, and they have released 2 CDs called 'Spiritualisation' & 'Aborigination'. You could say that Hydro is more adult oriented, but that's just my opinion. While in Hydro mode, they did a remix of 'Beyond These Shores' (2nd track on Spiritualisation), which I think was brilliant (sort of trancy, which was great for Joanne's voice). Apart from that, the idea of dba supporting Iona seems a bit strange, but who knows? God bless, Bill (originally from London, but now from Cape Town!) Events like >this take place from time to time in the UK, but I've not heard of >anything coming up. Perhaps our listees who work for / with Cross >Rhythms are in the know? I'm not aware of anything in the pipeline - and I assume that this group would be among the first to know if there was! One of the two members of Dba, Robbie Bronniman, is also the driving force behind another dance band called Hydro, who did a remix of "Beyond These Shores", featuring Joanne Hogg, on their first album. Hydro also played mainstage at Greenbelt this year, as did Iona, so that may be the concert that was referred to. They didn't play the same day, though. The CCM scene in the UK is fairly small - there are only a handful of bands that are "professional" in the sense of being full-time musicicians. Iona and Dba/Hydro are among them, and there's often a lot of cross-pollinisation from band to band - shared producers, session musicians, etc. It wouldn't suprise me if Robbie Bronniman was either going to be involved in the production side of some Iona recordings, or was planning to use Iona musicions on one of his other projects - but that's pure speculation on my part, so please don't quote this as "industry gossip" or anything of the sort. Incidentally, for those of you on the list who are interested in the UK CCM scene in general, there is a Cross Rhythms mailing list now in operation (it was launched earlier this week). You can get the details - including how to subscribe and unsubscribe - from the Cross Rhythms website (http://www.crossrhythms.co.uk). Or, email me and I'll subscribe you manually. As some of you know, I write music reviews for a local newspaper, and thought I would give you all a posting of my review of Heaven's bright Sun. It's tough to review in the space given, and this one went a littl longer than usual, so the version that see's print will probably be even edited down from this short one ... +++ start review +++ Iona Heaven’s Bright Sun Forefront Celtic/Progressive/Folk "Wow." That’s usually the response I hear from someone who has heard Iona for the first time. This British Isles band is probably one of the toughest bands to describe to someone. Their music contains elements of traditional Celtic music, jazz, 70s Progressive rock, and Folk music. Their latest project, Heaven’s bright Sun, is a live, two-disc recording. Recorded over three evenings in England this set presents nearly two hours of music from their previous recordings, and two new songs, I Will give My Love an Apple, and a medley of Irish Reels. Production is superb. You can hear each crisp drum beat, mournful tin whistle, ethereal guitar riff, lilting saxophone cry, and of course Joanne Hogg’s christaline voice. The sound on this live album is better than some band’s studio tracks. Lyrically, these discs touch on a broad range of subjects. From the Christian history and heritage of the British Isles (the far and away most popular theme to Iona’s songs), to personal intimacy with our savior, Heaven’s Bright Sun is powerful and uplifting. Unfortunately, the band has once again ensured that they won’t receive any radio airplay, with songs averaging six to eight minutes long. The final‚ (a powerful rendition of the hymn When I Survey) clocks in at an impressive 14:05. Not very radio-friendly, but spiritually uplifting and masterfully crafted. It is good to see the truth of God carefully crafted in an intricate tapestry of music. There is a quiet power in Iona’s music that can touch your spirit, regardless of whether or not it makes a big splash in the marketplace. +++ End review +++ It's also tought to come up with a musical "category" for Iona. I ended up with Celtic/Progressive/Folk, but still think it probably should have been Celtic/Progressive/Jazz. Any comments?
