Gill asked: > Does anyone know if he is intending to perform any of this stuff live? > The answer is YES: according to FoI, Terl has put together a band, also called Psalm, who will be appearing at the Routes (sic) and Branches Festival at Dudley Castle in the West Midlands on 13 September. For more info phone 01752 225623. It doesn't say who is the band, so if anyone knows please tell us. Due to the nature of the festival they played a slightly shorter set than normal. They also had some technical problems, or rather Troy had some technical problems with feedback. This did give him a chance to tell the McCloud joke (not reprintable here) which may have startled a few of the more conservative Greenbelters. I believe the problems phased Troy as it took most of the set to regain his composure. No surprises in the set, being a sample from their current full set, including Turning Tide/Treasure, Irish Day, Today, Luke(?), Inside My Heart, Heaven's Bright Sun and Reels. My memory (as always) is a little hazy. Sadly due to the curfew there was no time for When I Survey as a final encore, assuming this was planned. They certainly played later than some of the other bands on other nights. I feel that mainstage at Greenbelt is not the best environment to see Iona, as the audience don't seem to get so into the music (well compared to me anyway). Still they did turn in a good set, if not the best I've seen. Joanne couldn't remember how many times they had played Greenbelt, well I make it... 1989 Monday 1:00PM First gig with Joanne, along with David F And Dave B. in the middle of the afternoon in a venue called 'The River'. Beijing was never better. 1990: Monday 10:15 PM. Again in "The River" this time the band were also joined by Nick Beggs on bass/stick and Tim Franks on drums/percussion. 1991: Saturday (?) 9.00PM. This time supporting Steeleye Span in the Big Top (the second largest stage as Greenbelt). This time we see the introduction of Mike Haughton standing in for David F and Terl on drums. Strangely Steeleye Span featured one Tom Harries on bass. Mike and Dave also made a guest appearance during the ambient evening. 1992: Times uncertain. First time on Main Stage, supporting Runrig. Last show with David F. 1993: Friday 8.30 & 10.00. This time in the Pleasuredome the Big Top under an assumed name). Due to their popularity they do two shows. Standard line-up of Jo, Dave, Nick, Terl and Mike. 1995: Monday 9.45pm. First time headlining on Mainstage the band were joined by Troy on stage (for the first time?). 1997: Sunday 9.55pm This year. Well that makes 7 Greenbelts, going from a small tent during the afternoon to the main stage headlining. And I'm glad to say I've been at all the above. I guess Sandra is indeed her sister. Could someone refresh the listserv about what is required to become a member of Friends of Iona (especially in the US), and what anemities you get. Yours in Christ, Dennis +++ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Sep 1997 02:01:44 -0400 (EDT) From: Jilliemae@aol.com Subject: Re: iona (New listserver and sites) Hi all! :) After receiving mail from Aaron Pierce I was under the impression that we now had two Iona websites and two listservers but I am relieved to find that the list he was referring to is the same as this one! (Thanks anyway, Aaron! ;) Nothing like a little confusion to help you adjust to change, right? Tonight I went out with my son to eat at Cheddar's. The waitress saw me in my green on black Iona tee-shirt and exclaimed: "Iona!" Then she started singing "I-I Own Nah-Ah" (tried to type it out phonetically but I think you know which song I mean!) She not only knew of the band but said her room mate at Southwestern Assembly of God College had the new double live CD set. She was very pleased to wait on us with extra attentiveness and tell us all about her wonderful school and how God has worked in her life! This is the first time anyone who's seen me in my shirt (outside of a Phil Keaggy concert) has known who Iona was. It's a wonderful conversation opener! :) Got my Friends of Iona newsletter the other day from Kathy Bunker and to answer Dennis' question (hi Dennis!) it's $12 a year and you get a copy of the originally-mailed-in-the-UK snail mail newsletter almost monthly along with small discounts on Iona merchandise. It's worth it; contact Kathy by mail or phone. If she is online yet she doesn't spend much time on, is what I gleaned from talking with her in July. Also ask her about the music ministry she helps with. Iona supports it too. They collect and ship musical instruments (new and used) as well as other music materials to kids and groups of individuals in 3rd world countries so they can start bands and choirs. She'll be glad to tell you all about it! In the UK, for 5.00 GBP (approx 7.50 USD) we get 4 newsletters a year, containing news, tour dates, articles by members of the band etc. Each newsletter includes a merchandise order form covering albums, T-shirts, stickers. Friends also get a discount on albums eg I got HBS through FoI for 15.00 UKP instead of 18.99 UBP recommended retail price. I assume the US Friends will offer something similar, but you will have to contact Kathy to find out for sure. For information, the latest Newsletter included: News - HBS sales, Glastonbury, USA FoI, writing sessions, Sinatra collaboration (not!) and TC appearances. This past weekend, after viewing the funeral on TV, I found myself listening to "Journey Into The Morn". Divine Presence has also ministered to me. The past few weeks have been exciting for my husband and I. It seems like friends of ours are "discovering" Iona. (not like we push it or anything! :-) ) Since the music of "Riverdance" and "Lord of the Dance" seems to be so popular, it's nice that people find Iona just as good if not better! Isn't it funny, most people ask, "How come I haven't heard them before?" Any comments? He plays with such intensity and he is so multi-talented. I know that I shared this before but when Troy and Joanne were playing they were looking at the crowd making eye contact with so many and just enjoying the crowd response so much. It was a wonderful experence. One I will not soon forget. Keep me informed if you find anything out about Troys Solo project.
